In the early 1990s, Armenia endured one of the hardest chapters in its history. War, darkness, cold winters without electricity, empty shelves, and endless lines for basic necessities became part of everyday life. Money lost its meaning. Families stood for hours sometimes an entire day hoping to bring home something as simple and sacred as bread. One winter day, Nazareth, the elder of the Dermishyan family, stood in line for hours to buy bread for his family. When his turn finally came, he was told there was none left. The doors closed. The line dissolved. The hunger remained. That moment changed everything. Standing there exhausted and heartbroken, Nazareth made a quiet promise to himself and to his community ,that no one around him would ever have to leave empty-handed again. From that promise, a bakery was born. With limited resources but endless determination, the Dermishyan family opened a small bakery in Armenia, baking lavash the ancient Armenian flatbread that has nourished generations , along with other traditional breads made the way mothers and grandmothers always had , by hand, with patience, care, and love.
Bread was never just food , it was survival, dignity, and home. Over time, the bakery became a cornerstone of the community, a place where warmth existed even during the coldest days, and a tradition was formed , one rooted not only in recipes, but in responsibility , to feed, to serve, and to care.
Years later, that promise crossed an ocean.

In 2022, brothers Hovhannes and Karapet (Gary) Dermishyan brought the family legacy to California and took full responsibility for the bakery’s operations, while their father, Nazareth, remained in Armenia. That same year, the bakery opened as Mom’s Bakery, a name chosen to honor the taste of home and the hands of mothers, where real bread is made without shortcuts and recipes are passed down through memory, not books. Customers returned not only for the quality, but for the authenticity flavours that reminded them of where they came from or introduced them to something timeless and real. As demand grew, a new chapter began. The bakery was renamed Gary’s Mom’s Bakery, while everything else stayed the same ,the same family, the same recipes, the same hands, and the same heart. In 2025, a second location opened in Glendale, California, also under the name Gary’s Mom’s Bakery. Today, the bakery is proudly carried forward by brothers Hovhannes and Karapet, who honor their father’s promise every single day. This is more than a bakery it is a legacy. We believe bread connects people, tradition deserves protection, and a workplace should feel like family. Every loaf and every piece of lavash carries a story that began decades ago, during a time when bread meant hope. That promise still stands from Armenia to California, from one empty line to tables full of bread ,and we are honored to share it with you.
